Downturn in Alberta economy blamed for WestJet suspending direct flights between Kelowna and Fort McMurray

KELOWNA–The low price of oil is being blamed for WestJet’s decision to quit flying non-stop between Kelowna and Fort McMurray.

The change will take effect on February 15, 2016.

According to the YLW website, the service has seen a significant decrease in passengers over the last year.

It relied heavily on commuting workers, and the economic downturn in the oil industry has resulted in less of a demand.

Connecting flights to the northern Alberta city will continue.

At the same time, the airline is announcing two new daily flights between Kelowna and Victoria.
