RCMP investigating string of smash-and-grabs in Burnaby

Burnaby RCMP are searching for whoever is responsible for a series of car break-ins over the last two months.

Police say they’ve responded to about 350 smash-and-grabs from vehicles since mid-October. They say 47 incidents took place over three Burnaby streets on Saturday alone.

They believe one person is responsible for the majority of break-ins.

“What we are seeing is the suspect often driving a vehicle to the area, stop in the middle of the street, get out of his car and then proceeds to smash the driver side window. He then reaches into the vehicle often taking nothing more than sunglasses and change. Sometimes he takes nothing at all,” Cpl. Daniela Panesar said.

“The suspect then gets back into his car and drives to the next vehicle and does the exact same thing over and over again all along the street. We have seen as many as 19 vehicles vandalized on one street.”

RCMP say the break-ins often occur between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m.

Police are reminding people to not leave any valuables in their car.
