CP Holiday Train rolls into Calgary, raising money for food banks

The CP Holiday Train, raising money for food banks, has rolled into Calgary.

The show gets underway at 7 p.m. Friday at Anderson CTrain station. Performances include Kelly Prescott, Devin Cuddy and his dad, Canadian icon Jim Cuddy.

The show is free for all, but everyone attending is asked to bring a donation for the Calgary Food Bank. High on its wish list this year for items are peanut butter, pasta and canned green vegetables. Cash donations are also accepted.

“This year has been quite busy,” Shawna Ogston, from the Calgary Food Bank, said.

“We have seen a 35 per cent rise in new clients coming into the Calgary Food Bank, and the donations that we see at the holiday train will help get us through the holiday season.”

“We started in the 1980s, because of the boom and bust cycles which we have seen over the years. So, when we see this trend happen again, we were preparing; we were getting ready,” Ogston said.

“It is sad to see a lot of people having to come to the food bank because they’ve used all of their resources, but we are glad we were prepared and we are able to help individuals and families.”

After the Dec. 11 show in Calgary, the CP Holiday Train hits the tracks for shows in Blackie, Vulcan and Lethbridge Dec. 12.

It finishes its cross country tour in British Columbia on Dec. 19.
