Council votes to hike garbage, water rates

TORONTO – Council voted to hike water rates by eight per cent and garbage rates by three per cent Wednesday night.

Effective Jan. 1, there will be an eight per cent increase to water and wastewater consumption rates, which the city says will help address a $9.5-million dollar deficit and much-needed repairs on aging infrastructure.

The water rate hike will increase the average household water bill by $72 a year.
