International business leaders meet in Saskatoon

SASKATOON – Companies from parts of Saskatchewan and the United States came together Wednesday to discuss trade challenges and opportunities on both sides of the border. The Saskatchewan USA Trade Summit was organized by the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce and the Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership.

Topics included the impacts of a lagging Canadian dollar, the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the legalities of international trade.

North Dakota Lt.-Gov. Drew Wrigley delivered the keynote address, focusing on the importance of trade between Saskatchewan and the United States.

“We’ve got to work harder to have trade missions going back and forth between Canada and the United States,” Wrigley said, calling Canada the “most important” trade partner for the United States.

The lieutenant governor also told the crowd about a strong North Dakota economy, which benefits from the Bakken oil formation.

Innovation in unmanned aerial systems is the latest economic achievement for the state, he said. North Dakota is home to one of the six national test-sites for the growing technology.

The Saskatchewan USA Trade Summit also offered Canadian and American business leaders an opportunity to network during multiple breakout sessions.
