Harper, Greenpeace weigh in on Alberta PC election win

TORONTO – Prime Minister Stephen Harper has offered his congratulations to Alberta Premier Alison Redford, who clinched a 12th consecutive majority government for the Progressive Conservatives Monday night.

In a statement issued Tuesday morning, Harper said he is looking forward to working with Redford on issues of jobs, growth and prosperity.

Meanwhile, Greenpeace Canada says Redford owes her victory to environmentally conscious voters.

Greenpeace spokesman Mike Hudema says voters who believe in protecting the environment, valuing diversity and preserving public health care helped push Redford to victory.

And he says if the premier truly understands the science behind climate change, Alberta must reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

The victory, which makes Redford the province’s first elected female premier, flew in the face of polls that had the P.C. party trailing the Wildrose for much of the campaign.

In her acceptance speech, Redford stressed that her government will push for change in the province.

“[Albertans] want positive change and they want change that moves Alberta forward. You know what I know, change is difficult and we don’t always get it right, but I’ll tell you this Progressive Conservative party has introduced change and has promised change and will make change in this province,” said Redford.
