Barrie man charged with collecting $200K in parents’ social security benefits: police

TORONTO — A 75-year-old Barrie man has been charged with fraud and forging documents after investigators in Canada and the U.S. determined he had allegedly collected his parents’ social security benefits for 17 years after their deaths, totaling more than $200,000.

The United States Social Security Administration began investigating in 2012 when the recipient of the benefits would have turned 100 years old. The organization attempted to confirm their contact information and address, when their investigation revealed the recipients had died in 1998.
