Two Manitobans invited to try out for World Juniors team

WINNIPEG — Manitoba will have a pair of players pushing next week to crack Canada’s 2016 World Junior Hockey Championship roster.

Roblin’s Jayce Hawryluk and Elkhorn’s Travis Sanheim have been invited to the national team selection camp which begins on December 10 in Toronto. The two skaters have never represented Canada at a IIHF World Under-20 Championship before. They did wear the maple leaf together at the 2013 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and the 2014 IIHF World Under-18 Championship. Hawryluk was also part of Canada’s gold medal winning team at the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.

Sanheim is currently in his third season with the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen and has 24 points (7 goals and 17 assists) in 19 games. The 19-year-old defenceman was picked by the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round, 17th overall of the 2014 NHL Draft.

Hawryluk leads the Brandon Wheat Kings with 29 points (14 goals and 15 assists) in 24 games this season. He was drafted in the second round by the Florida Panthers in 2014. Hawryluk be joined by fellow Wheat Kings forward John Quenneville at Canada’s selection camp. Brandon bench boss and general manager Kelly McCrimmon will serve as an assistant coach.

A total of 30 players will be trying out for the team. No Winnipeg Jets prospects received invitations.

The 2016 World Junior Hockey Championship runs from December 26, 2015 to January 5, 2016 in Helsinki, Finland. Canada opens the tournament on Boxing Day against the United States.
