Surrey Mayor outraged as gangster released on bail

On November 12, Saleh Ali Mohammed was arrested after a car carrying what police say was a ‘confined woman’, weapons and drugs crashed into a retaining wall at 149th and 80b Avenue in Surrey.

At the time, RCMP called the arrest significant.

“A serious threat was taken off the streets, but not before he, on the night of his arrest, allegedly managed to give a fully loaded firearm to a youth and asked him to hide it,” said Kevin Hackett, Chief Superintendent Kevin Hackett of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit.

“This flagrant disregard for the well-being and safety of innocent people, including children, is unacceptable and we are committed to working collectively to ensure [it is] dealt with appropriately.”

On Wednesday, just 15 days after the incident, Mohammed was released on bail.

“I cannot imagine what the bar would have to be for him to be behind bars, but he should not be on the streets,” said Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner.

During a bail hearing, the crown opposed the release. As part of the release, Mohammed must meet several conditions, including detailed house arrest. He must also have the written permission of his bail supervisor for medical appointments, exercising, and other necessities.

Bail for Mohammed was set at $7,500 – a number Hepner finds too low.

“That’s not very much money, is it? For somebody who’s got cocaine and heroin in the trunk of the car, he probably could have taken off his sports jacket and paid for that,” she says.

Mohammed faces 15 charges, including assault, forcible confinement, uttering threats towards police, possession of a restricted weapon, careless use of a firearm with ammunition and possession of a prohibited device. His next court date is in December.
