Lethbridge Christmas lights tour back for 53rd year

An amendment to a bylaw coming to council Monday night aims to force homeowners to turn their outdoor Christmas lights off by 11 p.m., and keep them off until the next day. Global News

It’s been delighting residents in Lethbridge longer than the Super Bowl: the Lethbridge Christmas Lights Tour is set to head into its 53rd year. The well-known holiday route started with just two homes, as a bus tour for seniors. But it’s now exploded to hundreds of homes, and has become a family tradition for many in the city.

“It has evolved into something that we never could have imagined,” Stephen Kotch Jr., Lethbridge Christmas Lights Tour organizer, said. “It’s definitely a great family event for the public.”

The event runs Dec. 20 at Exhibition Park, where maps will be distributed and a tour led throughout the city. Attendees will be able to look at some of the most festive and well-lit houses in Lethbridge.

“People will be cheering, clapping, and hollering, just really having a fabulous time,” Kotch Jr. said. “They’re honking their horns, and it’s kind of like a parade in reverse. Because the floats are the homes and the yards and the spectators are, of course, on the move. So it makes it quite interesting for everybody.”
