REGINA – Regina drivers are getting some relief at the pumps this holiday season as gas prices dropped.

On Wednesday, the average price in Regina was 90 cents per litre, a drop of almost three cents from Nov. 22. The lowest reported price was 79.9 cents.

The last time gas prices were this low was in January.

According to GasBuddy’s co-founder Jason Toews, a price drop is typical in the winter.

“When the weather starts taking a turn for the worse, the days are shorter, people just generally don’t like to be around town, driving around nearly as much,” said Toews.

“Because of that, the demand for gasoline goes down and so does the price.”

Customers were paying around $1.05 for gas on Nov. 16 before it fell to 95 cents by the end of the week. At this time last month, prices hovered around 98 cents. They peaked back in August at $1.23.

“Later in January and February, we should see gas prices go back up again and by next summer, we’re going to see gas prices around $1.22-$1.25 per litre,” said Toews.

Across the country, drivers are also seeing a decrease in gas prices. In Edmonton, the average price is 81 cents and Winnipeg is around 92 cents.

“Gas prices are generally going down across the board, but it does vary a lot because of gas taxes,” said Toews.

Crude oil, which stayed steady at around $41 US a barrel from Nov. 20-24, has climbed to $42.41 US. However, oil is still very low compared to $76.81 US in November 2014.
