Slippery roads lead to dozens of injuries in Calgary

CALGARY- Snow-covered streets made for dangerous driving condition on Tuesday, leading to more than 144 crashes between midnight and 4:30 p.m.

Another 71 collisions were added to the list from 5:00 p.m. Tuesday to Wednesday morning. A dozen of those crashes involved injuries. There were also eight hit-and-run collisions involving property.

The number of crashes reported to police was more than three times the amount on Monday.

“If your collision is relatively minor and you don’t need police there, please report at the district office,” advises Acting S/Sgt. Colin Foster with the Calgary Police Traffic Unit.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“That way you keep the roads open and we can get everybody through the city safely.”

Just east of Chestermere on Trans-Canada Highway, a crash between a dump truck and a small car left a woman and two teens injured.

In another incident in the city, driver Joshua Smallman crashed his vehicle after getting his drivers licence just a few months ago.

“I was trying to turn into SAIT and careened into the SUV,” said Smallman.

In contrast, Bob Forrest has been driving for 32 years and passed along some advice for drivers.

“Make sure you’re not running all season tires because it’s not all seasons falling out of the sky. So get the proper gear or stay home.”

Fortunately, there were no significant crashes reported overnight.
