Friend who spoke to Manmeet Bhullar minutes before accident grateful for call

The day after Alberta MLA Manmeet Bhullar died in a crash on Highway QEII, one of his closest friends shared his last memory: a conversation he had with Bhullar just minutes before the accident.

“I missed his call earlier; Manmeet and I averaged a call a day,” Matthew Macdonald told Global News. “We talked for 10 minutes. He asked about friends and talked about projects and the future and he left me with marching orders.”

“That call ended at 1:40 p.m. and 20 minutes later, the accident happened. I realized this morning I was grateful for that accidental call; it gave me one last conversation with my good friend.”

Macdonald said the two went to law school together and he was the Calgary-Greenway MLA’s former chief of staff.

“He was as authentic in private as he was publicly; he was a warrior of service and servant in his actions,” Macdonald said.
