TORONTO – A vacuum truck operator has died in hospital after striking a power line in Vaughan, Ont. Tuesday morning.
York Regional Police said the incident happened just before 10 a.m. ET. near Highway 7 and Dufferin Street.
Police said the male employee was taken to hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries.
Powerstream, the company which provides electricity in the area, said the worker was doing an excavation when the truck boom made contact with a power line.
“The power shut off automatically when the incident happened,” said John Olthuis, Manager, Customer Communications & Marketing at Powerstream. “But power was turned back on remotely after the injured worker was cleared.”
Olthuis said the company isn’t sure if the truck operator was working on behalf of Powerstream or another business in the area.
