Sunalta Elementary School in Calgary is launching a drive Monday to sponsor a Syrian family.
It’s the first Alberta school to join in on the 1,000 Schools Challenge that began in Toronto in September.
Sunalta school hopes to raise $30,000 in the campaign to provide practical and emotional support to the family for a year.
On Monday at 3:20 p.m., the school bell will ring and as each child leaves, he or she will be given a red balloon with a fundraising letter attached to it.
A school official said it will show that Calgarians are trying to make a difference in “big and small” ways.
Also on Monday, the city will welcome 16 Syrian refugees.
