Mother of 3 kids involved in Calgary hit and run urges driver to come forward

CALGARY – The mother of three children who were involved in a hit and run walking to school Friday morning is asking the driver to come forward, and says the incident will forever change her family.

“As a parent, and not knowing how the accident happened, I can forgive you possibly for hitting my children,” Amber Chinery told Global News. “But the fact that you ran over their bodies as they laid in the middle of the road and drove away, I cannot forgive that.

“You owe it to my children to come forward and be accountable for what you’ve done.”

Chinery’s three children were crossing the street when a vehicle driving north on Bermondsey Way hit two of them Friday morning. Her 11-year-old son suffered soft tissue injuries; her 9-year-old girl has a broken leg. The third child walking with the group–the twin brother of the young girl–was not injured.

Chinery said doctors warned her son may need surgery to repair a broken collarbone.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“He’s got spinal injuries, injury to his right lung and of course bruises and road rash,” said Chinery.

Her daughter has a broken femur and will be in a cast for a minimum of two months.

“Their other brother, who was not injured who witnessed everything, unfortunately is suffering the most trauma at this time. He feels guilty for not being able to push them out of the way.”

Chinery said she’s afraid of the intersection at Berkley Drive and Bermondsey Way N.W., which is another busy intersection her kids have to cross. She said she was surprised they were hit at the quieter, residential crossing on Bermondsey.

“People fly down Berkeley Drive. I’ve seen many close calls; I’ve seen children being pushed out of the road to avoid being hit on that road,” she said.

“My oldest said he looked left and right, and he looked right, he looked left again again…As he looked right the vehicle was right there and that is the last thing he remembers until he woke up in the ambulance.”

“Nothing can put into words the feeling when you come up on a situation like that, and your children are bleeding in the middle of the road.”
