California woman charged after fatal crash kills Kelowna man

KELOWNA — A Kelowna man has died after an accident in Thousand Palms, California and a Palm Desert woman, believed to have been driving drunk, has been criminally charged.

The wife of the deceased Okanagan man, Jenny, told Global Okanagan her husband, 77-year-old Neil Karran, died in the incident.

The long-time Kelowna resident was in a golf cart with 76-year-old Ronald Little of Thousand Palms when they were hit by a vehicle.

Both men were ejected from the golf cart and died on the scene. There were also two dogs in the golf cart that were killed.

In a press release, Public Information Officer Mike Radford with the California Highway Patrol (CHP), said the collision happened on Wednesday at about 3:18 p.m. PST in the intersection of Desert Moon Drive and Colonial Drive.

According to Radford, Angela Lavanty, 32, was driving a 2006 Mercedes ML 350 northbound on Desert Moon Drive, behind the two men on the golf cart, who were also northbound.

“The right front of the Mercedes struck the left rear of the golf cart, causing moderate damage to the Mercedes and major damage to the golf cart,” said Radford.

“Due to the totality of the circumstances, Lavanty is being charged with two counts of DUI second-degree murder,” said Radford.

The CHP says the collision is still under investigation.
