LETHBRIDGE – A bizarre weather system started around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in Lethbridge, with wicked winds followed by a loud bang of thunder and lightning.
Next came a downpour of rain, then hail, and eventually southern Albertans woke up to flurries. The freezing rain combined with the snow made for a slippery commute for motorists.
Many southern Albertans were confused about Tuesday night’s strange. Global News weather specialist Paul Dunphy said it’s called a thunder flurry, which is not uncommon in the fall or spring.
“These are the transition seasons when we tend to have warm and cold air masses that clash and produce convective (rising) air currents that result in charge separation in the clouds,” said Dunphy. “The result is lightning and thunder mixed with snow instead of rain. In the case of yesterday’s storms, it was a rain and snow mix.”
