Elderly woman charged in attempted murder-suicide of husband with dementia, pets

TORONTO — An 84-year-old woman has been charged with attempted murder after police in London, Ont. say she gave her husband an overdose of medication in a murder-suicide attempt.

Another family member called Middlesex-London EMS on Sunday evening after finding the man and woman in medical distress.

Police said the 84-year-old woman and her 83-year-old husband were ill due to an overdose and transported to hospital. The woman also apparently attempted to poison two pets in the home, but both animals were unharmed.

The victim suffers from dementia and lives in a long-term care facility in London. The alleged murder attempt took place in the wife’s home.

The suspect remains in hospital in good condition, while her husband has since been discharged.

The 84-year-old female has been charged with attempted murder and with administering a poisonous substance to a domestic animal.

She is due to appear in court via an audio link Wednesday.

Police said they are not identifying either the victim or suspect at this time due to “the domestic nature of the relationship.”
