Youth charged following death on Alberta First Nation

EDMONTON – A 16-year-old boy has been charged with second degree murder in the death of a 35-year-old man on the Alexis Nakota Sioux First Nation.

Mayerthorpe RCMP responded to the first nation west of Edmonton shortly after 8 a.m. Friday after a body was found outside between two homes. RCMP said the victim had been stabbed.

On Saturday, RCMP identified the victim as 35-year-old Stacey Kootenay of the Alexis Nakota Sioux First Nation.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has also been charged with mischief and three counts of breach of probation. He has been taken into custody and is scheduled to appear in Mayerthorpe Provincial Court on Thursday.

The Alexis Nakota Sioux First Nation is approximately 85 kilometres west of Edmonton.
