CALGARY – One man is facing charges following a takedown in the community of Tuxedo Park on Wednesday night.
Neighbours describe seeing officers in SWAT gear surround a home in the 200 block of 20 Avenue N.E. at around 9 p.m.
Police said they were attempting to arrest a suspect as he left a motorhome behind the residence when he ran off.
Stelianos Psaroudakis tells Global News the residence has been home to criminal activity for months.
He captured the takedown on a CCTV camera installed outside his house, and said it showed a man running from police, hiding a gun by his vehicle and then being taken down by officers.
“He pulled out a handgun and hid it between my car, underneath the wheel,” said Psaroudakis. “I look at the side of my mirror, because my mirror was pushed in, and I look on the floor and there’s a handgun, so I called the cops over.”
“It’s scary. When I saw the gun come out, I was shaking, seeing the footage.”
“That cop almost died,” added Psaroudakis. “If that cop was there a second later he probably would have got shot. The guy had the gun out.”
Officers were able to catch the suspect and take him into custody.
Michael Adam Matchett, 30, is charged with one count each of possession of a handgun dangerous to the public, carrying a concealed handgun, and possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number. He is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 13, 2015.
Police also took two additional people into custody from inside the motorhome. Both were interviewed and one was charged. Ryan Hawke, 39, was arrested on unrelated warrants.
