LAVAL – Residents in Laval are fighting for access to the Bois de la Source forest.
The wooded area isn’t about to be destroyed; a massive, nearly two-metre high fence is being proposed by the city to be built around the periphery, limiting access to nature lovers.
“I’m not very happy with it,” Louise Desnoyers told Global News.
“I feel we’ve been backstabbed, basically.”
Desnoyers is one of almost 600 people to have signed a petition demanding Laval halt its plans.
A spokesperson for the city tells Global News the decision to build the fence wasn’t made by local officials, but rather it was a decree issued by the Quebec government.
However, other municipalities with publicly accessible forests don’t have any fences and haven’t received any such decrees from the government.
People living next to the Bois de la Source forest argued they don’t want one either.
“There’s absolutely no need for a fence,” Desnoyers said.
The city councillor representing the district promises to fight the fence, agreeing it will restrict access to the nature space.
“If you have only a few entrances, person will go less,” Alain Lecompte told Global News.
