A tropical depression that formed on Sunday has strengthened and is affecting much of a popular vacation spot in the Caribbean.
Tropical Storm Kate is producing maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h with higher wind gusts, with tropical-storm force winds extending out 150 km from the centre.
The storm is moving northwest near 22 km/h, and is expected to make a further turn to the north this evening, perhaps sparing some of the islands — such as Nassau — a direct hit, though high surf and winds are expected.
Tropical storm warnings are in effect for Northwestern Bahamas where 25 to 77 mm of rain is expected to fall overnight.
