Firefighters in Oklahoma went the extra mile providing a 5-year-old boy with a brand new costume after his Halloween took a terrifying turn.
Tulsa Fire Department media relations officer Stan May tells Global News that Brayden Fortney and his mother Chauntel were the victims of a hit-and-run accident on Friday, Oct. 30.
The accident damaged two vehicles not including the hit-and-run driver’s, and left Fortney’s car completely totaled.
The accident left both mother and child unconscious. When Chauntel came to a few minutes after the collision her son was still unconscious.
“I was panicking. It was a nightmare, especially when he was unresponsive and not responding to anything I was saying. That was the scariest part,” Fortney told NBC News 6 in Oklahoma.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they cut Brayden’s clothes off so they could properly assess his condition prior to treating him.
First responders frequently have to cut clothes off patients, but this case was unusual because of what Brayden happened to be wearing: a red-and-blue Superman Halloween costume.
Mother and son were rushed to a local hospital to be treated for their injuries. But Tulsa firefighters still felt the job was unfinished.
After failing to find him another Superman costume on short notice, they settled on another, equally appropriate superhero costume: a firefighter costume.
“The nurses and doctors kept calling to say how much he appreciated it,” May said.

Brayden was released from hospital on Halloween, but was not feeling well enough to go trick-or-treating.
Luckily, he has his costume all set and ready to go for next year.
A post on the Tulsa Fire Department Facebook page also says Brayden will be visiting the fire station once he’s feeling up to it.
