City of Vancouver plans to shift to 100 per cent renewable energy by 2050

Vancouver’s council has approved a plan to shift to 100 per cent renewable energy by 2050.

The city’s strategy is to cut energy use while increasing the supply and use of renewable energy and eliminating its reliance on fossil fuels.

The plan includes adopting zero-emission standards for new city buildings, transitioning its vehicle fleet to renewable sources and meeting targets to cut greenhouse gas.

Last year, 31 per cent of Vancouver’s energy came from renewable sources — mostly electricity — while 45 per cent came from natural gas and 24 per cent from gasoline for vehicles.
