An 18-year-old woman is dead and a man is in hospital with a broken neck after being stuck by a car in Vancouver on Wednesday night.
Vancouver police said a car travelling westbound on SE Marine Drive at around 8 p.m. when it struck a woman and a man, who were crossing at Victoria Drive. After striking the two pedestrians, the 54-year-old driver of the car then hit a power pole and crashed into a nearby bus stop.
Both pedestrians were taken to hospital with serious injuries. The young woman later died of her injuries and her 20-year-old friend is in hospital with a broken neck and head injuries.
The driver from Vancouver was not hurt in the incident and is cooperating with the investigation.
Investigators continue to gather evidence and speak with witnesses to help determine the factors involved in this horrific crash,” Acting Insp. Ken Eng from the VPD Traffic Section said in a press release.
“This collision resulted in the tragic loss of a young life and life-altering injuries for another. We want to remind all road users that these tragedies are preventable.”
Marine Drive remains closed in both directions as police investigate.
Police say this is Vancouver’s 11th deadly collision in 2015 with nine of the fatalities being pedestrians.
