SASKATOON – Later this morning prime minister-designate Justin Trudeau will be sworn in along side his cabinet, which will look quite different from any other in Canadian history. For the first time at a federal level, half the ministers will be women.

Gender equality in cabinet has only been seen at a provincial level here in Canada: in Quebec in 2007 and most recently in Alberta earlier this year.

Some are slamming the decision to put a requirement on the number of women in cabinet, saying our ministers should be chosen solely based on merit. However, supporters of the decision say our cabinet is already chosen based on an array of factors, such as regions and language, why not add gender parity to the mix?
