York police urge pedestrians, motorists to be safe as Daylight Saving Time ends

TORONTO – York Regional Police are reminding pedestrians and motorist to be mindful of road safety rules following the end of Daylight Saving Time.

The time shift may lead to vehicle crashes and pedestrian injuries as people adjust to the lighting conditions outdoors.

Police are advising motorists to follow road rules by yielding to pedestrians and for citizens to use crosswalks lawfully.

Drivers must also stop when approaching a crosswalk and reminded that pedestrians expect drivers to stop.

Below are some tips provided by York Regional Police for motorists and pedestrians.

Motorist:

  • Don’t drive distracted
  • Make sure your headlights are turned on and in good working order
  • Drive defensively and courteously
  • Give yourself extra time to arrive at your destination
  • Turn your car radio down
  • Save snack time for home or office
  • Wear your seatbelt

Pedestrian:

  • Wear bright or light-coloured clothing and reflective strips when walking in dusk or darkness
  • Walk on sidewalks and cross at crosswalks were possible
  • Remove distractions such as headphones or ear buds
  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the road
