Two Vancouver men are trying to inspire a discussion with a parody video centering on the international reputation of Vancouver as a “no fun city.”

The video pokes fun at the image Vancouver seems to have acquired in recent years that paints it as, well, boring.

Jason Lucas, one of the producers behind the video, told Global News he noticed quite a few articles on social media calling Vancouver a “no fun city” and “mind-numbingly boring” going viral and creating a lot of heated discussion.

After seeing the popularity of these articles, Lucas and his friend Matt Dennison knew that this was a hot topic for Vancouverites and decided to make a rebuttal.

We were tired of seeing our home city being labelled as dull, boring and uninteresting. We have lived here our whole lives and having fun has never been an issue. As Vancouverites, we are incredibly spoiled by our surroundings and it is all too easy to get caught up in the negativity that swirls around on the Internet.

Lucas says they don’t want Vancouverites to sit around and wait for the fun to come to them.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Get out there and try something new, go explore an area you haven’t been to, or even just try a new bar or restaurant. The fun is out there, and it isn’t hard to find,” he says.

Lucas says the response to their video has been overwhelming.

The video has been picked up by many online media sources and has received more than 53,000 views on YouTube since being posted on Thursday.

And while the response has been mostly positive, Lucas says there are some people, who are sticking to the statement that Vancouver is a ‘no fun city.’

“Going into this project, we knew it was a hot topic and if approached in the right way that it would start a lot of discussion,” he says. “It is safe to say we have achieved this goal and we are excited to see where the discussion goes.”
