WINNIPEG – The Canadian Football League announced on Thursday they have fined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Jamaal Westerman the maximum amount following a low hit to the knees of Ottawa RedBlacks quarterback Henry Burris on Saturday.

“Health and safety is of paramount consideration when it comes to the players in our league and we need to ensure we take the necessary steps to protect them,” CFL Commissioner Jeffrey L. Orridge said in a media release.

Following a hearing that included Westerman, the league, the players association and Orridge, the Commissioner decided to impose the highest fine allowed under the CFL’s collective bargaining agreement.

As per league policy, the amount of the fine was not disclosed but according to the CBA that was ratified in 2014 the league can only fine a player the equivalent of half of his game check.

The Blue Bombers are currently on their bye week and will close out the regular season on November 6 against the Toronto Argonauts.
