Hundreds of soldiers, dignitaries and the general public gathered at the National War Memorial in Ottawa Thursday to mark the one-year anniversary of the deadly attacks that claimed the lives of two members of the Canadian military.

Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, 53, was murdered in a targeted hit-and-run in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que.

Corporal Nathan Cirillo, 24, was gunned down two days later on Oct. 22, 2014 in an unrelated attack as he stood guard at the National War Memorial.

The gunman, Michael Zehaf Bibeau, stormed Parliament Hill before he was fatally shot be then- Sergeant-at-arms Kevin Vickers.
