MONTREAL – The young woman accused in the death of her baby, who was mauled by a dog, has pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal negligence Wednesday at the Saint-Hyachinthe courthouse.
The young mother was charged with manslaughter in June 2010, after her three-week-old daughter was mauled to death by a husky at her home in St.-Barnabé Sud, northeast of Montreal.
The baby’s 17-year-old mother and 37-year-old grandmother, had been smoking on a balcony close to their kitchen, where the baby was seated in a portable car seat when the dog attacked the child.
By pleading guilty, the 19-year-old woman has avoided legal proceedings that were expected to begin on May 1.
She returns to court on June 12 for sentencing.
