Camp Hurlburt legacy to live on

NEAR VERNON — The legacy of Camp Hurlburt will live on according to the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) which has purchased the approximately two and a half acre property.

Trinity United Church, which ran the camp located on the northern shores of Okanagan Lake, was forced to sell it because of budget restraints.

The church wanted to see the camp land become a park, so it approached public bodies first, instead of trying to sell the land privately.

“I think that’s a pretty rare piece of land and to be able to have that preserved for future generations is really important to us,” says Rev. Jeff Seaton with Trinity United Church.

The RDNO says the acquisition came as a result of a partnership with the church, adding the property will offer the public more than 1,000 feet of waterfront recreation area.

“Lakefront property is limited and in high demand,” says says Juliette Cunningham, Chair of the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee.

“We are fortunate that the members of Trinity United Church were interested in keeping this property open and available to the community.”

Seaton says the church is happy with the acquisition as the camp has been a part of its relationship with the Greater Vernon community for more than 80 years.

The regional district says after development on the property, the park will be opened to the public.
