KELOWNA — Everyone inside a downtown Kelowna apartment building was evacuated Sunday evening after a kitchen fire broke out in one of the units.

Around 4:30 p.m., the Kelowna Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in a hallway of the 18 unit apartment. It is located in the 700 block of Bernard Avenue.

“All occupants of the building had evacuated and the fire was extinguished by the fire department. There were no injuries.” says Platoon Captain Steve Wallick.

Wallick says it was determined on scene that the fire was accidentally caused when items were left unattended in an oven.

“All occupants other than two from the affected unit were allowed back into their residences,” says Wallick.

Three engines, a rescue vehicle, a command vehicle and a safety officer responded to the scene along with help from B.C. Ambulance Service paramedics, RCMP and Fortis.

Wallick reminds people to ensure their smoke alarms are working properly.
