Moving day delayed after fire destroys 3 homes under construction

Three homes badly damaged in Sage Hill fire .

Homeowners that were planning to move into three homes in the community of Sage Hill were devastated Saturday morning.

The Calgary Fire Department was called to a fire at Sage Bluff Link in the northwest where firefighters found three homes fully ablaze.

All three of the homes were under construction and were expected to be complete by the end of the year.

Most of the houses in the surrounding area were still unoccupied.

One firefighter was transported from the scene with an injury to his leg but no one was else hurt in the fire.

Battalion Chief Bruce Gelhorn said that high winds were a cause for concern as crews tried to contain the flames from spreading to nearby homes so the captain on scene at the time called a second alarm.

“That was mostly had to do with the high winds,” he explained. “He was concerned about the embers travelling to other homes in the surrounding area here.”

The homes were in their final stages of construction, a representative from the home builder arrived at the scene later in the morning to assess the damage.

Gelhorn said that the investigation will likely take at least two days as crews had to make sure all hot spots were out before entering the homes.

“It probably won’t be until tomorrow until daylight when they’re able to get in there and determine the cause.”

Ultimately he said it will be up to the home builder to decide how much, if any, of the three homes can be salvaged.
