Sanctions against Fort Macleod mayor upheld by Court of Queen’s Bench

Fort Macleod Mayor Rene Gendre.

FORT MACLEOD, Alta. — A Court of Queen’s Bench judge has ruled the Town of Fort Macleod in southern Alberta acted fairly and in the best interest of the community when it sanctioned its mayor beginning in June 2014.

Justice K.D. Nixon ruled that city council’s actions were not for any improper purpose, as had been otherwise alleged by Mayor Rene Gendre.

She also said council’s action was due to the blatant unreasonableness of the mayor’s behaviour.

Coun. Michael Dyck had said Gendre was repeatedly warned about acting outside the bounds of council procedures, including serving on committees not approved by council.

He said Gendre had great ideas but his execution of them were problematic.

Gendre had maintained the allegations were unfounded and that he was a strong proponent of bringing new business to town.
