A toll gate in China wasn’t prepared for one of the country’s worst-ever traffic jams Tuesday as the National Day holiday wound down — creating a log-jam as far as the eye could see.
Beijing’s traffic monitor said that 125,000 cars — largely filled with people returning from vacation — entered the region over the course of the day. That’s a 10 per cent hike from the same event a year prior.
Some 50 lanes of vehicles were open at the gate located along the G4 Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway about 45 kilometres south of Beijing. The backup was caused by a bottleneck on the other side of the gate that cut available lanes in half.
