Police find over $50,000 of fentanyl in small Alberta town

Police in southern Alberta have seized over 1,000 tablets of fentanyl, along with various other drugs and weapons, after a traffic stop in the small town of Standoff on Thursday.

The Blood Tribe Police Service said in a release that two adults were arrested at the scene for possession of stolen property found in the vehicle.

Police then searched the car more thoroughly and found:

  • $11,920.55 in cash,
  • 1,003 tablets of fentanyl (valued at $50,150.00),
  • 100g of suspected crack cocaine (valued at $10,000),
  • 19 prescription tablets,
  • 6.4g of marijuana,
  • Brass knuckles,
  • Pepper spray,
  • Three cell phones,
  • Various stolen items.

According to a news release, the Blood Indian Reserve has been “plagued by numerous overdose deaths since the arrival of fentanyl in the community a year ago.”

Blood Tribe Police Service Staff Sergeant Joseph Many Fingers, credits the service’s Crime Reduction Unit for the historic bust.

“This is very big,” said Many Fingers. “It’s by far our largest drug bust and seizure. So all the credit goes to the crime reduction unit guys, all the credit goes to them. They’ve done an excellent job and their perseverance finally paid off, it’s very good for our service.”

The two women facing charges will appear in Lethbridge Provincial Court on October 13th.
