A Conservative Party rally with Stephen Harper in Surrey, B.C. was interrupted three separate times Thursday evening by protesters.
Harper, who was joined by Conservative candidates Sucha Thind, Harpreet Singh and Nina Grewal for the rally in the Aria Banquet Hall, was interrupted for the first time shortly after he began speaking.
A person stood up with a sign reading “Climate Justice” before being escorted outside by security.
Minutes later, Harper was discussing economic policy when a man attempted to storm the stage from the side.
Harper was quickly surrounded by security and the man was escorted out and later detained by police.
A third person who stood up to shout was also escorted out of the hall by security.
Harper made jokes after the man ran towards him and the protester shouted, saying it was a sign his opponents were in trouble when they felt they had to disrupt his event.
Following the third interruption, after chants of “Harper! Harper!” died down, the Conservative leader said “Friends, you know they’re worried when they stop coming to their own rallies and come to ours instead.”
The environmentalist group 350Vancouver took responsibility for the action in a press release.
