REGINA – The old curling rink in Yorkton went up in flames early Thursday morning.

Yorkton Fire and RCMP were called to the corner of Tupper Avenue and South Front Street and found the curling rink on fire.

Fire crews tried to get the blaze under control but were unable and had to move to a defensive mode to save the structures around the old rink.

Homes in the area were evacuated but no one was hurt.

“We will be treating it as a suspicious fire. We’ll work in conjunction with the RCMP, because it is an unoccupied building,” said Yorkton Fire Chief Trevor Morrissey.

The old curling rink was being transformed into a storage building.
