WATCH: Texas cop joins high school marching band, absolutely nails it

Let it never be said that Atascosa County Sheriff’s Deputy A.J. Mendez isn’t trying to make his neighborhood safe for snappy drum lines.

Video of Officer Mendez slapping the skins with the Poteet High School band at a football game in D’Hanis, Texas on Saturday night has gone viral since it was posted to the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page on Monday.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The video has been shared nearly 50,000 times as of this writing, and picking up over 2 million views.

As it turns out, this wasn’t exactly Deputy Mendez’s first time playing with the Poteet High School band. A proud member of the Poteet class of 2005, Mendez was a member of the band during his high school years.

In fact, CBS-19 News reports that Mendez even helped co-wrote the song he’s seen playing in this clip.

A two-year veteran of the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office, Mendez has been working as an escort for the band at games, and has been asked repeatedly by the band directors to pick up the sticks again and play with them.

The Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office says they shared the video as part of their maxim that “community matters”.
