SASKATOON – Grade 12 students at Regina Public Schools received a shock Tuesday, in a letter sent home saying the school board will no longer host graduation banquets. The reason for the cancelled ceremonies is that they have become too expensive for some families to attend, and the size of the events make it difficult for schools to manage.

The school board says they want to focus to be more on the cap and gown ceremony. They are also looking at organizing some sort of celebration, likely in the form of a “semi-prom” which would only be for graduates only. It’s a model that has been used in other schools in Canada, as well as in the United States.
Some students are upset by the decision, and an online petition is already close to its goal of 1,000 signatures.
