EDMONTON — There’s an old saying that bad things happen in threes – a saying the Alberta Golden Bears can certainly relate to. Their playoff hopes took a hit with their 3rd straight loss, a 39-21 decision to the (10) UBC Thunderbirds. They also lost the services of rookie quarterback Ben Kopczynski in a game that was broadcast LIVE on Canada West Football on Shaw TV.

Kopczynski left the game in the second quarter with a right knee injury. He was running with the ball towards the sidelines, when he was taken down with a horse collar tackle from Terrell Davis. He immediately clutched his right knee and needed help to the sidelines. There’s no word on the severity of the injury, though he did not return to the game.

Kopczynski was replaced by rookie quarterback Brad Baker who looked fairly comfortable out at Foote Field. Baker would complete 20 of 33 passes for 207 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

As for the game, the Bears found themselves in a hole early. UBC dominated in the first quarter, with 11 first downs compared to just one for Alberta. They strung together 164 offensive yards and put up 18 points. While the Bears and Baker soon found their rhythm, they just weren’t able to overcome that early deficit.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

With the loss, the Bears are now tied for the fourth and final playoff spot with the (8) Saskatchewan Huskies. After the Thanksgiving Bye-week, the Bears will head to the west coast to complete their home-and-home series with UBC.

DINOS – HUSKIES

The (1) Calgary Dinos continue to steamroll their way through the Canada West. Canada’s top ranked team scored 32 unanswered points in the final 15 and a half minutes en route to a 59-19 win over Saskatchewan. Andrew Buckley led the Dinos with 468 yards passing and 4 touchdowns. Just how dominant are the Dinos? They’ve outscored their opponents 211-45 in their last three games.

With five field goals, Dinos kicker Johnny Mark entered the CIS record books. He’s now tied with Tyler Crapigna (McMaster: 2010-14) with 84 career field goals.

Calgary sits alone in first place with a 5-0 record, while the Huskies are tied for 4th with the Bears at 2-3.

BISONS – RAMS

The defending Hardy Cup Champion (6) Manitoba Bisons had little trouble with the winless Regina Rams, beating them 34-19. The win moves the Bisons to a tie for second place with UBC, while the Rams have all but been eliminated from post season contention.
