Move over, man buns. Man braids are the new big thing. Or at least among hipsters.
Man braids have been around for a while.
Jared Leto rocked it.
So did Willie Nelson. His man braids actually sold for $37,000 at auction last year.
But right now, man braids are all over Instagram.
There’s the man-bun/man-braid combo.

The little “starter man braid” for those who don’t have much to work with.
The voluminous braid. Look at that height!
The “flowers in your hair” braid.
The side braid.
Pigtails.
And all kinds of other fancy braids. Ladies, let some of these inspire you.
But just because you can braid, does it mean you should? GQ suggests “you take a hard pass on the man braid for now.”
Industry expert Michael Levine, who owns hair schools and salons in Vancouver, also isn’t a fan.
“If you’re not Willie Nelson, you shouldn’t do it.”
He doesn’t think it’ll take off like the man bun did, which by the way, he thinks is passé (unless you hair is actually long and in need of pinning up).
Another reason you might want to avoid the two: potential hair loss if your bun/braid is styled too tight.
“I’ve seen crazy damage from tight braids, ridiculous damage to the scalp,” Levine warned.
“The smaller the braid and the tighter the tension on it…literally I’ve seen entire panels come away.”
Under-cuts are also apparently out. What’s in, according to Levine, are longer, more disheveled locks.
Regardless of how guys choose to style their mane, we will likely continue to see more of it on social media.
“Men used to always not really talk about what they’re doing with their hair. It just sort of was,” Levine said.
“It’s just been in the last couple years with the resurgence of barbering when men’s hair fashion has started to be talked about.
“Now it’s like guys are really celebrating their hair.”
If you think you can pull off a man braid, here’s a tutorial for how to do it:
