TORONTO – A group of 12 Chileans have been arrested and face a total of 97 charges in connection to a series of commercial break-and-enters throughout the Greater Toronto Area, police announced Friday.

It is alleged the incidents took place early this year when the men broke into a number of commercial locations including jewelry stores and pawn shops.

Police say the suspects were wearing disguises, disabled security alarms and broke into locked safes.

In some cases, the safes were completely removed from the premises. Items stolen included large amounts of cash and jewelry.

Following an investigation, search warrants were executed in Toronto in June and September whereby authorities seized large quantities of stolen goods.

Arrests were made as a result of the search warrants and one suspect was also apprehended while trying to board a flight from Toronto to Montreal carrying over $25,000 in cash and stolen items.

Police say the men entered Canada via the United States using fraudulent identification and the search is still on for three outstanding suspects who are believed to have returned to Chile.

Canada-wide arrest warrants have been issued for Carlos Fernando Orellana Pizarro, 45, Ricardo Javier Parada Neira, 26 and Daniel Elias Morales Elgueta, 39.
