Syracuse University suspends ‘kiss cam’ after complaint

Is the “kiss cam” going the way of the dinosaur?

It just might be after a national debate was sparked when Syracuse University decided to pull the plug on the popular segment, which usually surprises couples on the big screen at events and encourages them to smooch.

The university decided to do so after a Syracuse fan, Stephen Port, attended a Syracuse Orange event and wrote a letter to the editor of Syracuse.com asking for change.

“The instances I witnessed at the game encourage and condone sexual assault and a sense of male entitlement, at best. And they are an actual instance of assault, at worst,” Stephen Port wrote in his letter.

“[The] first people they showed, not a couple, [the] woman shakes her head, ‘No.’ [The] guy pauses, kind of pleads for a minute. [The] crowd cheers [and] he goes for it anyways, [and the camera] pans to the next one. Same type of thing, she says no. Then a bunch of hands come in the frame, pushes her head up to his head [and the] crowd cheers “ Port explained to WTVH.

The kiss cam has had many instances of positivity as well. In February of this year, a couple at a Syracuse Orange basketball game got engaged while on the cam.

“I was never out to kill the kiss cam, I was out to raise an issue of awareness to create a discussion about the spectrum, what’s wrong and what’s right.”

Globalnews.ca contacted Syracuse University and received this statement:

“We are taking the time to assess the concerns expressed in the letter to the editor. We discussed this with POMCO, the sponsor, and they supported that approach,“ Susan Edison, a spokesperson for Syracuse University wrote in an email.

The kiss cam has long been a staple of live events around the world. What do you think? Should the kiss cam be abolished with these concerns in mind?
