TORONTO – Room has won the top prize at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The drama, directed by Lenny Abrahamson and starring Brie Larson and Vancouver’s Jacob Tremblay, won the Grolsch People’s Choice Award.
Based on Canadian author Emma Donoghue’s novel, the story follows a mother and her young son, who believes the shed they live in is the entire world.

The inaugural Platform Prize, which is worth $25,000 and chosen by a jury, went to the Canadian film Hurt by Alan Zweig.
The Grolsch People’s Choice Award is often a predictor of Academy Award success.
Last year’s winner was “The Imitation Game,” which went on to get eight Oscar nominations, nabbing one golden statuette for best adapted screenplay.
