WINNIPEG — Design culture will be celebrated in various ways across the city over the next few days. The 5th annual Winnipeg Design Festival kicks off on Wednesday and aims to draw thousands through Winnipeg’s art galleries, creative spaces and downtown core.

The theme for this year’s festival explores how design is all around us.

“Many people don’t realize that everyone interacts with designed objects, spaces, and experiences hundreds of times, every single day, said Monica Derksen, festival coordinator. “This is an opportunity to show how great design can positively impact the life of the individual, the city, and the environment.”

Over the course of three days there will be over 20 events for people of all ages to enjoy. Organizers want Winnipeggers to know that you don’t have to be a creative professional to participate in the events, which range from kite making for kids to a pop up print shop where you can design your own postcard. Many of the activities are interactive and educational.

The festival wraps up Saturday evening with a back alley party in the Exchange District, which was a huge success last year. Many of the events take place in the downtown area which the WDF hopes will encourage people to stay downtown after their work days.

“Let’s bring Winnipeg’s creative thinkers, doers, makers, and designers together with the city to celebrate what is and let’s inspire and encourage what is to come,” said Derksen.
