Blustery weather causes several boats to run aground

WATCH: You might have noticed some high winds when you woke up this morning. It’s wasn’t to the same scale as a destructive windstorm that struck Metro Vancouver two weeks ago, but it did cause some damage. Jennifer Palma reports.

Strong winds across the south coast of British Columbia this morning saw events cancelled and several boats run aground.

“It is blustery, and it’s going to continue to be gusty for the rest of the afternoon,” says Global BC meteorologist Kate Gajdosik.

“We had all that warm air entrenched across the south and, of course, to the north of us…the cold front was drifting down across the province. Well, those two air masses are now butting up against each other.”

Gusts have been as high as 48 kilometres an hour in the Vancouver area, and several boats ended up on beaches surrounding English Bay.

While the weather was ideal for windsurfers, it did cause the cancellation of the kayak portion of the Canuck Place Adventure Race.

“We had a huge westerly, northwesterly this morning. It really started whitecapping out there [and] we just had to cancel the kayak portion of the adventure race, just for safety for our participants,” said Debbie Butt of Canuck Place.
