WINNIPEG – Hundreds of Manitobans brought their fishing rods to The Forks on Saturday hoping to make a catch for a cause. The Urban Fishing Derby is a free event that gives anyone the opportunity to try fishing, and spend some time on the river.
“It’s a great fishery,” said Katherine Ward from the Urban Angling Partnership. “You can catch sturgeon, walleye, catfish, pike, all right in the Red and Assiniboine River.”
Ward said that many people live close to the Assiniboine and Red River and have no idea how much the river has to offer. Organizers were also pleased to see some people coming out to give fishing a try for the first time.
“We just want people to get out and experience it,” said Ward.
The event accepted donations on behalf of Marymound School to support youth and families.
